tourist in dc

 i was visiting dc and

people there can get really rude if you stand on the wrong side of the escalator on the metro. what's the big deal. you're in their way, and god forbid they just say "excuse me". i was afraid that they were going to push me down the stairs.

dc is a wonderful city, but a problem navigating even for a walker. there are crosswalks between lights at popular sites, but a lot of drivers either don't know about it, or don't care. they drive very fast, and pretend to not see you. you can't just walk out at a light, but there is a law that says they have to stop at those walkways-they just don't. i've seen drivers yell at people in the crosswalks to get out of the way. if you don't get killed, it's a great city to visit. more later

I'm a DC native. I've tried "excuse me." Believe me, I've tried it all. Some of us don't think escalators are rides at Disney World. We need to get to work, class, movies, and concerts. Tourists are constantly in our way (especially where I live, near the zoo). So you can see why some of us get annoyed.

Tourists can be just as rude. Some refuse to move. Some argue. Some insult me for asking. I still say "excuse me."

As a D.C. native, it is my god given right to shove any fat tourist that gets in my way down a flight of stairs (or escalator for that matter). It's not rocket science -- stand on the right hand side.

Tourists, get a clue. It's really not that hard, or are you really just that stupid? Read the sign on every freaking escalator on Metro, "Please stand to the right.", and then do it! I'm tired of being stuck behind a group of your fat butts clogging the escalators while I'm trying to get to work/home. You're visiting MY city...don't make my life miserable.

"Washington [D.C.] is a city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm."
--John F. Kennedy

Tourists need to know this coming into town but I’m disappointed in the locals! A third of you work for the federal government, another third does contract work for it, while the last third represents either one in litigation against the other. Treat that fat ass on the escalator in the morning as foreshadowing and come up with a good coping strategy for the day. We’ll all be better off. :)

Do they even have escalators in Peoria or wherever you people come from? I grew up in suburbia, too, but it doesn't take a goddamn rocket scientist to figure out "stand to the right".

Future DC tourists: Please read these rules and these addenda before coming here.

Enjoy your stay!

By the way, we do actually have a lot of rocket scientists in this city. NASA is right down the street from where I work! They've figured out how to use the escalators, too.

i wonder how tourists survive getting around the town. i wrote about the way the crosswalks don't carry much respect around here, and cars tear thru them when people are crossing. they do it to everyone, but we just force them to deal: i saw a person bang on the hood of a car and yell: "hey, i'm walking here! ". i love a classic put to good use. anyway, the tourists have a problem doing aggressive things like that, but they don't seem to have a problem walking out in the middle of the street, making all the traffic around them come to a screeching halt. i've seen many accidents because of that. who's the person who just got a load of crap for complaining about pedestrians walking out into traffic, and how they should get tickets? i agree completely. learn how to walk, or stay home, but the same to the drivers. people from out of town, however, do deserve a little patience. they don't know where they are, and there's not much help for them. they don't know whats here, much less how to get there. i'm still annoyed, tho.

i hate to keep bitching about the same thing, but another group of tourists walked out in the street in front of my vehicle and not only almost got run over, but a huge line of cars had to wait for them, and of course, all missed the light. it was morning rush hour traffic, and each light is precious, but they sauntered and dawdled, i love that word, and slept until we were ready to scream at them.
i feel better now. i really wanted to comment about the people who need help finding things. there's a look that people get when they don't want to ask for help, but they're lost enough to need it. these are usually the people who are polite and nice and don't want to bother anyone. they want to travel independently, but the city and the park service are of little or no help. signs are non-existent, and roads are not just convoluted, they're often unnamed. this city is run by idiots, and the citizens and tourists have to pay for their idiocy.

this is something that was inspired by a tourist who told me about how they got lost going down fla. ave. it was a horror story. they were traveling along, and suddenly they were on another steet. they got righted, and a few blocks later got lost again. then around vermont ave., got lost again. i've actually never gone that way, so i followed their route, and damned if i didn't get lost three times. i called the 311 city dispatch number, and complained, and asked them for help navigating thru there. they helped, and transfered me to someone to complain to, who transfered me again, who transfered me again, who took my number so someone could call me back with some interest in the situation. needless to say, no one called me back. for all they know, i could still be lost down there. thanks a lot, dc.
